It says something for how young Damian Willemse was when he first got introduced to senior professional rugby that he only recently celebrated his 22nd birthday.

At an age just beyond when, traditionally, youngsters used to be given the key of the house, Willemse already has three and a bit Super Rugby seasons behind him, as well as a clutch of Springbok caps and a coveted Rugby World Cup gold medal. He’s also fulfilled various roles during his apprenticeship at the Stormers – he had a season at flyhalf under Robbie Fleck’s coaching in 2018 but in 2019 he specialised in the last line of defence at the bequest of Bok coach Rassie Erasmus.
